This stereograph is titled for its vantage point, the view from the Mariposa Trail, with the valley floor given as 4,060 feet above sea level. The Mariposa Trail was one of the routes that carried visitors down into Yosemite Valley, so the card shows the approach as well as the valley itself. Published in 1870 by William I. Marshall as part of a numbered series of Yosemite views, it is an albumen print mounted on card and meant to be seen through a stereoscope. Cards like this were popular parlor items in the years after Congress set aside the valley for public use in 1864, and they helped introduce the region to people who would never make the journey.
