A June snowstorm lends this stereograph an unusual look, since the Mariposa Trail, which entered Yosemite Valley from the south, would ordinarily be busy with summer visitors by then. The card was published in Boston by John P. Soule around 1870, one of many stereo views of the valley that his firm sold to eastern households. Stereographs like this were viewed through a hand-held viewer to create a three-dimensional effect, and they brought the valley's cliffs and waterfalls to parlors across the country. The series number, 1189, places it within a larger set of California views.
