Looking east from the Mariposa Trail, this chromolithograph shows the valley from the approach that many early visitors took after reaching the Sierra Nevada by stagecoach and horseback. The image was printed by L. Prang & Co. of Boston and drawn after a painting by John R. Key, one of the artists who helped Louis Prang build a market for color prints of California scenery. Prang's firm was known for reproducing paintings in many stone-printed colors, so the print gives a sense of how Yosemite was presented to eastern audiences in the early 1870s.
