Looking west down the valley floor, this chromolithograph shows a view that visitors to Yosemite in the 1870s came to treat as one of the region's signature scenes, with granite walls rising on either side of the Merced River. L. Prang & Co. of Boston printed it in color after a painting by John R. Key, building the image from multiple stones, one for each color. Congress had set aside Yosemite Valley in 1864, and by the 1870s such colored views were reaching middle-class parlors as affordable alternatives to original paintings.
