Yosemite Valley is the subject here, rendered after a painting by Thomas Hill, the English-born artist who settled in California and became one of the best-known painters of the Sierra Nevada during the late nineteenth century. Hill was among the artists who helped popularize the valley's granite cliffs and waterfalls with eastern audiences, and his large canvases were widely reproduced as engravings and prints. Pictures like this one played a part in building public support for protecting Yosemite, which was set aside as a state park in 1864 before becoming a national park in 1890. Worth noticing is how the view balances the sheer rock walls with the meadow floor, shaping the valley as a scene of grandeur made for contemplation.
