Bridal Veil Falls drops roughly 620 feet past the granite face of El Capitan's neighbor cliffs at the valley's eastern end, and its thin, wind-blown spray is what gave it its name. Photographers were drawn to the valley almost from the moment Euro-American visitors arrived in the 1850s, and the waterfall became one of the first scenes that defined how Americans pictured Yosemite. Views like this one helped convince Congress to set aside the valley and the Mariposa Grove as a state park in 1864, an early step toward federal protection. Worth noticing is the scale: the dark cliffs and tiny figures, if any appear, show how small people stood against the valley's walls.
