Bridal Veil Fall, which drops roughly 620 feet beside the granite face of El Capitan's neighbor in Yosemite Valley, is one of the most recognizable waterfalls in the park. Its name comes from the way wind often pulls its spray sideways, so the water seems to drift like a veil rather than fall straight down. Nineteenth-century photographers and painters who came to the valley after its 1864 federal grant for preservation treated the fall as a showcase of the region's scale and drama. Look closely at the base of the cliffs to get a sense of how the water and rock together shaped the view that drew so many visitors.
