Bridal Veil Fall, which drops roughly 620 feet into Yosemite Valley, was among the first natural wonders the early California photographers turned their lenses toward. This albumen print from about 1865 comes from the years when Carleton Watkins and other photographers were hauling heavy mammoth-plate cameras into the valley, which was then newly set aside by Congress as a protected grant in 1864. The long exposure needed to capture the falling water and the granite walls around it made such images a considerable technical feat, and the sharp detail in the cascade and surrounding cliffs remains one of the strongest reasons these early views still draw attention today.
