Nevada Fall is the cascade that gives this view its name, a 594-foot drop on the Merced River that sits above the valley floor in Yosemite. Shot in the mid-1860s, when Yosemite had only recently been set aside by Congress as a protected grant to the state of California in 1864, the albumen print shows the falls framed by dark conifers and steep granite walls. Photographers of this era, working with heavy mammoth-plate cameras, prized such scenes because they conveyed the scale of the wilderness to eastern audiences who would never see it in person. Look closely at the trees in the foreground, which help set the scale against the cliffs.
