Nevada Fall is the lower of the two great falls on the Merced River in Yosemite Valley, dropping roughly 594 feet in a single sheet of white water. This albumen print, dated around 1865, shows the cascade framed by the granite walls and conifers that define the valley. Albumen prints of this kind were made from large glass negatives and were the standard way to reproduce photographs in the 1860s, so the sharp detail and tonal range visible here reflect the technology of the day. Photographers working in Yosemite during these years, in the first decade after Congress set the valley aside for public use in 1864, helped shape how Americans pictured the wilderness.
