Yosemite Valley had only recently drawn national attention when this albumen print was made around 1865, the year after Congress and President Lincoln set the valley aside for public use under California's administration. Large-format "mammoth plate" cameras such as those used in the valley produced negatives with extraordinary detail, which albumen prints on paper could reproduce with sharp tonal depth. Photographs like this one helped persuade eastern audiences that the valley's granite walls and waterfalls were worth seeing for themselves, and they shaped how the landscape was imagined long before it became a national park in 1890.
