As No. 1 in Prang's Gems of American Scenery, this chromolithograph turns to Yosemite Valley, the glacier-carved gorge in California's Sierra Nevada. Boston printer Louis Prang issued the series in the early 1870s to bring American landscapes into homes in color, at a time when many people knew the far West only through pictures. Congress had set aside Yosemite Valley for public use and protection in 1864, and its granite walls and waterfalls soon became some of the most widely pictured scenery in the country. The print is worth a closer look for the effort chromolithography required, with a separate stone for each color, to suggest the valley's light and rock to viewers who would never see it firsthand.
