Yosemite Valley views of this era usually show only cliffs and waterfalls, but this chromolithograph also turns to Native domestic life. Philadelphia publisher Joseph Hoover issued it around 1873, and color lithography let a publisher reproduce a scene in many copies for a broad market. Congress had set the valley aside as a state park in 1864, and visitors were arriving in growing numbers, while the Indigenous families who had lived there for generations were often shown in such prints as picturesque figures in a landscape. Comparing the figures with the scenery shows how artists of the period framed both.
