El Capitan, the sheer granite face that rises roughly 3,000 feet above the floor of Yosemite Valley, is the clear focus of this gelatin silver print, with trees along the valley floor giving scale to its height. The picture comes from the portfolio *Parmelian Prints of the High Sierras*, a set of views that circulated in the 1920s, when photographs of the national park's granite walls and waterfalls were widely sought by visitors and collectors. Its rock face drew early climbers and photographers, and the valley's dramatic walls helped build the case for protecting the area as a national park.
