El Capitan rises on the left edge of this view, its sheer granite face towering over the valley floor. The photograph was taken from the air and copyrighted by Spence Air Photos of Los Angeles, a commercial aerial photography firm, which explains the high, sweeping angle over the valley. The date, around 1947, comes from the caption card and has not been independently verified. Yosemite Valley was carved by glaciers over a very long time, and by the 1940s its cliffs and waterfalls had drawn climbers, photographers and visitors for decades.
