El Capitan, the sheer granite monolith that rises roughly 3,000 feet above the floor of Yosemite Valley, is the subject here, and an albumen print from the 1860s-1880s era would have been among the earliest ways most people saw it. Albumen prints, made by coating paper with egg white and silver salts, produced the crisp detail and warm brown tones that suited such a dramatic rock face. Photographers who carried heavy glass plates into the valley helped convince eastern audiences that Yosemite was worth preserving, a case that contributed to its designation as a state park in 1864 and later to national park status. Look closely at the valley floor and the shadows along the cliff for a sense of the scale that drew visitors.
