Two men stand on a rocky overlook high above Yosemite Valley, a vantage that let visitors take in the granite walls and valley floor at once. As a stereo photograph, it was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, where two slightly offset images merged into a single scene with striking depth. The record does not name the men or give a date, so their identities remain unknown here. Yosemite drew many prominent visitors in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and Theodore Roosevelt camped in the valley with John Muir in 1903, a trip that helped publicize the park.
