Roosevelt's 1903 visit to Yosemite is the detail that sets this picture apart: the party is gathered at Inspiration Point, a granite overlook above the valley floor that was a favored stop for visitors arriving by stagecoach and on foot. Roosevelt had come to California that spring, and his time in Yosemite with the naturalist John Muir helped build his enthusiasm for conservation. The print was made by the Southern Pacific Company, whose railroad carried many tourists to the region, and its copyright registration shows the company was promoting the valley's scenery as much as the presidential visit itself.
