Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir stand together at Glacier Point, high above Yosemite Valley, in a picture taken during Roosevelt's 1903 visit to California. The two men had spent several days camping in the park that spring, and their trip helped build support for federal protection of the Sierra Nevada's forests and valleys. Roosevelt, then president, and Muir, the naturalist who did much to publicize Yosemite, make an unlikely-looking but telling pair in the frame. The stereograph format, with its paired images meant for a viewer, was a popular way of bringing distant landscapes and famous people into American parlors in the early 1900s.
