A campaign badge meant to be pinned on a coat and worn to the polls pairs an equestrian figure of Theodore Roosevelt, carrying the U.S. flag, with a head-and-shoulders portrait of John Weaver. The banner reading "stalwart Republicanism" borrows a term from the party's earlier factional past, when Stalwarts were a wing of Republicans in the 1870s and 1880s. The mounted Roosevelt recalls his Rough Rider fame from the Spanish-American War, and the halftone process let printers reproduce such images cheaply in quantity. The notes give 1903, a year when Roosevelt, who had come to office after McKinley's assassination, was building toward his own election.
