Rather than the stiff, formal pose common to official portraits, this head-and-shoulders study by M.J. Leclerc shows Theodore Roosevelt laughing as he faces the camera. Roosevelt, the 26th president, led the country from 1901 to 1909 and later ran as the Progressive candidate in 1912, and his broad grin and animated expression were well known to the public. The record dates the print to about 1921, two years after Roosevelt's death in January 1919, so it was likely registered or printed from an earlier sitting. It is held by the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division.
