Theodore Roosevelt appears here in a straightforward head-and-shoulders view facing the camera, the kind of image that made him recognizable to a national audience around 1900. He had risen quickly through New York politics and the Spanish-American War, and he was New York's governor by 1899, so his face was in high demand in newspapers and magazines. This example survives as a halftone, a process that broke a photograph into tiny dots so it could be printed in quantity on rotary presses. That reproduction method is part of what makes the image worth noticing: it shows how portraits of public figures traveled widely in the years before he became vice president in 1901.
