Theodore Roosevelt sits for this head-and-shoulders portrait turned toward the camera, a plain, direct pose that avoids the outdoor ranch and hunting imagery he later became known for. The print is credited to M.P. Rice of Washington, D.C., a photographer whose studio produced many formal portraits of officials in the early 1900s. Roosevelt had come to the presidency in 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley, and c1902 falls within the first full years of his term, when his image was being widely circulated. Portraits like this one helped shape the public face of a president who was energetic, outspoken and eager to be seen.
