Unlike the stiff, formal views that dominated Theodore Roosevelt's public image, this head-and-shoulders study shows him laughing, facing the camera with an open, unguarded expression. M.J. Leclerc made the photograph, which is catalogued as c1921, two years after Roosevelt died in January 1919, so it may reproduce an earlier sitting. Roosevelt led the country from 1901 to 1909 and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906, and his famously buoyant personality comes through in this candid moment.
