Theodore Roosevelt appears with naturalist John Burroughs and a companion named Billy Hofer at a campsite near Losser Creek, a setting that reflects the outdoor life Roosevelt valued throughout his public career. Burroughs, a writer on birds and the natural world, was one of Roosevelt's closest friends, and the two men shared a love of wilderness that they pursued together, most famously on a 1903 trip through Yellowstone. The picture dates from between 1900 and 1910, a period when camping was growing in popularity among city dwellers and when Roosevelt was expanding federal protection of public land.
