Two of the most recognizable figures of the American conservation movement stand together in this stereograph, taken at Glacier Point above Yosemite Valley in 1903. That spring Theodore Roosevelt made a camping trip to the valley with John Muir, the Scottish-born naturalist and founder of the Sierra Club, and the two spent several days touring the granite cliffs and groves. Their conversations there helped push Roosevelt toward stronger federal protection of wild lands, and within a few years Yosemite's surrounding areas were brought under federal management. The stereograph format, with its paired images meant to be viewed through a special viewer, was a popular way for early twentieth-century audiences to see famous places and people.
