Theodore Roosevelt is shown returning a salute from the decks of passing warships during a naval review held off Oyster Bay, New York, on August 17, 1903. Roosevelt spent much of his summers at Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay, so the review took place close to his home on Long Island Sound. The stereograph was issued by photographer William H. Rau, who sold views of notable events to a wide public, and its paired images would have given viewers a sense of depth as the ships steamed past the president.
