Sagamore Hill, the Oyster Bay estate on Long Island that Theodore Roosevelt built in the early 1880s, is the subject here, shown as a residence rather than as a setting for a public event. Roosevelt lived there with his family and returned to it between political campaigns, and he came to regard it as his true home. The house was a working family place, filled with books, trophies from his hunting trips, and visitors from across the country, and the estate's wooded hills and harbor views shaped much of his later life. A c1912 photograph of the house dates from the years he was out of office and running for president on the Progressive ticket.
