Here Roosevelt sits in a chair on the lawn at Sagamore Hill, his home in Oyster Bay on Long Island, with Senator Charles Warren Fairbanks of Indiana beside him. The photo dates to about 1904, the year Roosevelt won election to his own term and Fairbanks was his running mate for vice president. Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm that sold stereographs and news pictures, made and copyrighted the image, so it reflects the commercial photography of the period. The informal setting at the family estate offers a look at how a sitting president was pictured away from the official stage.
