Few images of Theodore Roosevelt show him so relaxed: seated three-quarters length, with his hat resting on his knee, he turns slightly to the right rather than facing the camera squarely. The record dates the print to about 1903, during his presidency, which had begun in September 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley. Portraits from these years circulated widely in newspapers and magazines, and Roosevelt, who understood the value of his public image, often sat for photographers. The date comes from an old caption card and is marked as unverified, so it is worth checking against other sources.
