Theodore Roosevelt sits in this three-quarters length portrait, turned slightly to the left, a pose that photographers of the period often used to soften a sitter's stance and bring out the face. The print dates to about 1904, the year Roosevelt won election to his first full term as president after succeeding William McKinley in 1901. Portraits from this stretch of his career helped shape the image of a vigorous, outdoorsy chief executive, and the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress holds it as part of a large national collection of presidential likenesses.
