Theodore Roosevelt is shown here in a three-quarter length pose, turned to the left and seated in what the record describes as a car or carriage, a detail that sets this view apart from the many formal studio portraits of him. The picture dates to about 1910, the period just after Roosevelt left the presidency in 1909 and went on his African safari, and it carries the copyright line of the American Press Association of New York, a wire service that distributed news photographs to newspapers across the country. Images like this one helped keep a former president visible to the public while he was out of office and preparing his return to politics.
