Alice Roosevelt, the daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, sits in this three-quarter length portrait turned slightly to the left, the kind of formal pose that photographers of the 1900s favored for society sitters. The picture was made around 1906, when Alice was in her early twenties and had become a figure of intense public fascination in Washington, known for her wit and her defiant independence. Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the most respected women photographers of the era, took the image, and it survives as a halftone print, a reproduction process that let newspapers and magazines circulate photographs like this one widely.
