Here Alice Hathaway Lee Roosevelt stands in a three-quarter length pose, turned slightly to the left, a format that was popular for studio portraits in the early 1880s. She married Theodore Roosevelt in 1880, and the picture was taken in the few years before her death in February 1884, two days after she gave birth to their daughter, Alice. The print itself was made later, around the mid-twentieth century, from an earlier negative. Its record ties it to the Roosevelt family, whose story would soon shift sharply after her death.
