Alice Roosevelt, the elder daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, is shown here in a three-quarter standing pose, turned slightly to the left and holding a small dog. Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the most accomplished women photographers of the era, made the portrait around 1902, when Alice was a famously high-spirited figure in Washington society. The White House years drew intense press attention to her, and her casual pairing with a pet dog suits the informal, lively image she cultivated. The Library of Congress holds the picture within Johnston's collection, which documents early twentieth-century American life.
