Alice Roosevelt, the daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, was a famous figure in Washington society by 1903, and this full-length study shows her standing and turned toward the left. The print is a photograph that was hand-colored, a technique photographers used to add tints to black-and-white images before color film existed. It comes from the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection at the Library of Congress, a body of work by one of the era's leading women photographers, who often documented the social and political elite of the period. Alice's outspoken wit and fashionable image made her a celebrated presence in the capital during her father's presidency.
