The sitter stands full length in this half-plate daguerreotype, turned to the left with a top hat in one hand and a coat held at his side. The velvet lining of the case carries an embossed stamp for Brady's Gallery at 205 and 359 Broadway in New York, a studio famous for its portraits of notable Americans in the 1850s. The record identifies the sitter as the painter William Sidney Mount, a genre painter from Long Island known for scenes of rural and everyday life, but it also lists an alternate identification as Alfred Jones, an engraver, so the name remains open to question.
