Full-length daguerreotypes of children are uncommon, which makes this small sixth-plate portrait of an unidentified child, turned to the left, unusual. Gilt accents on the dress and a ring were added by hand, brightening the mirror-like silver surface at a time when most portraits were left plain. Made around 1855, it reflects a decade when daguerreotypes were the dominant form of photographic portrait, and long exposures required young sitters to hold very still.
