The sitter's dress has been hand-colored, with a touch of paint laid over the silvery plate that gives this small child's portrait a warmth most daguerreotypes lack. Shown three-quarters length and turned slightly to the left, the unidentified subject sits in a sixth-plate image of the kind that made portraiture affordable to many families in the 1850s. Such pictures were usually kept in plain leather cases like this one, where the metal plate's mirror-like surface shifts from dark to bright as the viewer moves.
