Truman Smith, the Connecticut-born congressman and Whig politician, sits in this half-length daguerreotype turned to the left, wearing spectacles. The plate is one of the many portraits made in Mathew Brady's studio during the 1840s and 1850s, when the daguerreotype was the leading method of photographic portraiture in America. Its identification rests on a frontispiece published in the American Whig Review in November 1852, which shows how portraits like this one were reproduced for a wider reading public. The image was later copied onto a transfer and preserved in the Library of Congress daguerreotype collection.
