Alice Roosevelt, the outspoken daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, is the sitter here, shown in a three-quarter length pose with a hat and fur muff as she stands before a window and faces the camera. The portrait dates to around February 1906, when Alice was a famous young public figure in Washington, known for her fashionable style and sharp wit while her father occupied the White House. Fashion photographs of this kind show how fashionable women of the era combined a large hat, a fur muff and a fitted outdoor costume, and they capture the image Alice herself helped shape in the press.
