The record gives no name for the sitter, but the dark-haired woman turned to the right under an oversized blue hat is what sets this print apart. It was issued by the Calvert Lithographing Company of Detroit around 1892, when color lithography had become cheap enough to fill shop windows, magazines and trade cards. Prints like this were often made to be kept or to carry a sponsor's name, so the portrait may have been as much about the hat as the face. Wide-brimmed picture hats were at the height of fashion in the early 1890s, which makes the print a useful glimpse of how women dressed for public life.
