A half-length portrait of James Fuller Queen, who lived from about 1820 or 1821 to 1886, shows him seated and turned to the right. The card's printed mount names the studio of A. Newman at 228 North Ninth Street in Philadelphia, which places the sitting in that city. Queen was active in Philadelphia's photographic trade, so the portrait reflects a community where photography was both a business and a personal tradition. Cabinet cards like this one became the standard format for studio portraits in the 1880s, larger and more durable than the earlier carte de visite, and they were often kept in family albums or displayed on parlor tables.
