Alice Roosevelt, the eldest daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, sits full length in this c1902 portrait, dressed in a wide-brimmed hat and a fur-trimmed coat with a matching muff. She was a teenager in the White House years and a celebrated public figure, so the image captures her at the moment her style was drawing national attention. The photographer, Frances Benjamin Johnston, was one of the most prominent women working in the medium at the time and known for her carefully composed portraits of the Roosevelt family and of Washington society. Look closely at the hat and muff, which show how fashionable dress of the early 1900s used textures and large shapes to signal status.
