Written on the back of this hand-colored stereoscopic daguerreotype is the name Mrs. Christopher Wetherill, followed by a note calling her the best friend of someone whose name the record leaves uncertain. The sitter rests her arm on a draped table, a pose that helped her hold still during the exposure. Paired images like this one were viewed through a stereoscope to create a sense of depth, and the hand coloring added soft tints to skin and fabric that the early plates could not capture. The Library of Congress acquired the piece in 1997 as part of the Marian S. Carson collection.
