A seated woman, shown in a daguerreotype from around 1840, has been hand-colored, a finishing touch that was far from routine in the earliest years of photography. The daguerreotype process, announced in France in 1839, produced a single positive image on a silvered copper plate, and it was prized for its fine detail but had no natural color. Colorists often added tints to cheeks, lips and dress with powdered pigments or paint, which made portraits feel more lifelike to sitters and their families. The gilt mat and case that accompany the image were part of the object's presentation, protecting the fragile plate beneath glass and framing it as a keepsake.
