A seated young boy in a gilt case, shown in three-quarter view, is the detail that sets this plate apart from the other early portraits on this board. Daguerreotypes like this one were made on silver-coated copper sheets, each a single unique image that could not be duplicated, which is why the object itself is as much a part of the record as the picture. The 1840 date places it in the first years after Louis Daguerre's process was publicized in 1839, when studio portraits were still expensive and a sitter had to hold still for a long exposure. Pay attention to the case, since its gilding and hinged cover were meant to protect the fragile surface and make the portrait feel like a keepsake.
