A three-quarter length daguerreotype from about 1840 shows a boy whose name has been lost to time, a reminder of how early photography recorded ordinary people as well as the famous. Daguerreotypes were made on silvered copper plates, each one a single positive image with no negative to copy from, so every portrait is unique. Exposures in this period often ran for several minutes, which required sitters to hold still and explains the serious, composed expressions common to images of the era. Because the boy is unidentified, the picture is valuable mainly for what it shows of early portrait studio practice and the dress of the time.
