Two nearly identical exposures, taken side by side, make this a stereoscopic daguerreotype of William Young McAllister (1812-1896) seated with his wife in an ornate chair. Viewed through a hand stereoscope, the two images fuse into a single three-dimensional scene, a effect that made stereo portraits a popular novelty in the 1850s. Full-length seated poses like this one were costly to produce on a metal plate, and the decorative furniture and formal dress reflect the careful staging typical of the period. The Library of Congress holds the piece as part of its daguerreotype collection.
