A seated family group of three, a man, a woman and a child, is the detail that distinguishes this plate from the many single-sitter portraits on the board. Dated 1844, it belongs to the first years of commercial photography, when the daguerreotype process, announced in France in 1839, was spreading into American and European studios. Sitters of that era had to hold still for several seconds or longer, so a group with a young child posed for the camera was a considerable feat of patience. The silvered copper plate gives the image its mirror-like surface, and the sharp detail and reversed composition are characteristic of the process.
